Do you think that the Kingsboroughs merely wanted a published author for a governess for the status? Had they even read her work?

No, I don’t think that was why. The Kings simply needed a governess. Mary’s book came out at the beginning of the new year (1787) after she took the position. Thoughts on the Education of Daughers was originally published in a magazine in three parts, the Lady’s Magazine, the most popular lady’s magazine in England. At first Lady Kingsborough praised Mary’s work and paraded her in front of her guests. Lady Kingsborough was quite vain. But as Mary drew more and more attention, Lady Kingsborough grew jealous of her, and their relationship soured. Lady Kingsborough also thought Mary drew too much of her husband’s attention.

Their loss, our gain, I suppose! How demeaning for poor Mary.
